The Esprit transformed Colin Chapman's small Norfolk-based company into a bona fide supercar manufacturer. It was closely based on a concept car built by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Ital design which debuted at the 1972 Turin Motor Show and used a modified Lotus Europa chassis specially made for the project by Mike Kimberley and his team in Norfolk then shipped to Italy. The production Esprit, visibly related to the concept, was unveiled in 1975 and deliveries got under way in the autumn of 1976. The £7883 Esprit, which used Lotus’ new 2-litre 907 engine, followed Chapman’s philosophy of ‘adding lightness’ and weighed less than 2000lbs, giving it impressive performance.
To test the projected components and production processes the first three prototype Esprits were hand built in 1974/75 at Lotus' then recently acquired Ketteringham Hall facility, which later found fame as the home of the Team Lotus F1 operation. These pre-production cars were destroyed as prototypes often are. Esprit Chassis 0100G, which is modelled here, was the first of an initial batch of ten built on the production line at Hethel and was finished early in 1976. Originally a development car, it was later sold to dealers High Cliff Motors in Grimsby and on to its first custodian.
Current owner, Gordon Masson from Aberdeen, acquired it in October 1983 and has completed a detailed restoration of the car to its original specification, a process made more difficult by its many unique features; for instance Lotus kindly manufactured a special ‘one-off’ replacement front spoiler using their original moulds as it differs slightly from the component fitted to all the later cars. Lotus displayed 0100G prominently at the retirement gathering for Lotus Chief Executive Officer, Mike Kimberley in 2009. Kimberley even referred to the car during his speech as "a special jewel in the Lotus crown".
